Spasticity is common in SCI, ranging from mild stiffness or tightening of muscles to uncontrollable muscle contractions. One of the goals of this study is to better understand the specific spinal cord nerve pathways responsible for spasticity. Transcranial magnetic stimulation and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will be used to measure activity of spinal cord nerves. Participants will undergo 2-3 study visits with muscle and nerve testing and MRI. These imaging studies will be associated with clinical measures of spasticity, combining exercise training with an acoustic (sound) startle stimulus on arm and leg function. The goal is to improve arm and leg muscle recovery by enhancing control over spinal cord nerve networks. Participants do not have to have spasticity to participate in this study.","age_from":18,"age_to":75,"ais_a":false,"ais_b":true,"ais_c":true,"ais_d":true,"ais_e":false,"time_since_injury_from":1,"time_since_injury_from_unit":"years","time_since_injury_to":75,"time_since_injury_to_unit":"years","healthy_volunteers":true,"inclusion_criteria":["NOT have implanted device, e.g. pacemaker"],"study_type":"interventional","allocation":"Randomized","brief_description":"Very often, people who have a SCI have difficulty doing things with their arms or hands as a result of muscle stiffness , or spasticity. Spastacity can cause problems performing even the simplest of everyday tasks. This research will help us understand how the body recovers and changes neurologically after SCI.","detailed_description":"2-3 study visits within a time span of a month\nParticipation in muscle testing (upper and lower limb), nerve testing and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)\nParticipation in exercise training (with or without sounds delivered through headphones)","final_testing_performed":null,"version_id":5,"emsci_trial":false,"curation_status":"curated","overall_recruitment_status":null,"primary_intervention":{"id":3,"name":"Rehabilitation","parent_id":null,"icon_name":"medical-rehabilitation"},"primary_benefit":{"id":11,"name":"Spasticity","parent_id":null,"icon_name":"wave"},"sex":"All","injury_level_from":"C1","injury_level_to":"T12","start_date":"2020-05-13","organization":"Shirley Ryan AbilityLab","benefits":[{"id":1,"name":"Arm/hand function","parent_id":null,"icon_name":"hand-expand"},{"id":5,"name":"General health","parent_id":null,"icon_name":"general-health"},{"id":11,"name":"Spasticity","parent_id":null,"icon_name":"wave"},{"id":12,"name":"Standing/walking/mobility","parent_id":null,"icon_name":"walking"}],"injuries":[{"id":3,"name":"Traumatic","parent_id":1,"pivot":{"trial_id":2816,"injury_id":3}}],"interventions":[{"id":3,"name":"Rehabilitation","parent_id":null,"icon_name":"medical-rehabilitation"},{"id":5,"name":"Technology","parent_id":null,"icon_name":"technology"}],"outcome_measures":[],"recovery_mechanisms":[],"published_at":"2021-11-05T18:41:29.000000Z","modified_at":"2021-11-05T18:41:29.000000Z"},"layout":"trial"}},
